DS 288
DS was the regional identifier for the Peebles County Council registration authority.
DS 288 is a very early number presumably attached to this sports-racing car to acknowledge Major E.G.Thomson who was a director of the family shipping line Ben Line Steamers based in Edinburgh. His family home was at Callands in Peeblesshire. The Major was the motor sports enthusiast who provided substantial financial backing to Ecurie Ecosse in the 1950s and owned the 1956 Le Mans winning Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-type (XKD 501) following its retirement from competition. In 1970 XKD 501 was auctioned and the proceeds donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in line with the family's shipping interests. The Jaguar MWS 301 was bought by Sir Michael Nairn who commissioned a restoration by Ray Fielding of Pedigree Cars Ltd at Forres. BBC Scotland aired an hour long program in 2019 tracing the history of Sir Michael Nairn's business and titled "The Town That Floored The World", that town being Kirkcaldy in Fife.

Ecurie Ecosse was re-formed and planned a come-back to Ingliston on July 24th 1983 making front page headlines in the July 1983 Scottish Motorsport newspaper. A Chevron B54 Sports 2000 car was entered for Orkney farmer Willie Hourie and the initial plan was to enter it for all the remaining Ingliston and Knockhill meetings of the season. Since 1982, the team have become World Champions in Group C2 World Sports Car Championship, have been involved in the development and running of the factory Aston Martin AMR1 team. The moving force and Principle of Ecurie Ecosse is Hugh McCaig who is a Patron of the Jim Clark Trust. They have won the British Touring Car Championship for Vauxhall and have helped support some of Scotland’s most successful modern racing drivers including David Leslie, John Cleland and Jim Clark Trust Patrons Allan McNish, David Coulthard and US IndyCar Series Champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti.

Three photographs below from Bo'ness 9th September 2012 of Ecurie Ecosse founder member Ian Stewart with what I understand is the 1951 XK120 raced at Winfield in 1951 and Charterhall from 1952 by Ayr dentist Fred Mort and Mrs. Sylvia Black. It is written that Fred lent the car to Ian to race at Turnberry, perhaps in May for the Formula Libre race.

This model in full scale form is the finest racing sports car that I have seen. After the limelight of Ecurie Ecosse and factory racing the car came into the hands of Major E.G. Thomson (of Peebles) who financed Ecurie Ecosse to some degree. In 1970 it was auctioned and bought by Sir Michael Nairn who commissioned a restoration by Ray Fielding of Pedigree Cars Ltd at Forres. Jenks on his "Scottish Journey" came across MWS 301 on the premises in 1975 when it was finished and ready to take to the road again MlinkS. Between 1975 and 1999 when it was again sold, the car appeared at the Glamis Castle Exraveganza where it was driven by Stirling Moss. The above two photographs were taken at the home of the late Jock Farquharson whose idea it was and who organised the coming together of the two great icons. The car was auctioned by Sotheby's in 2016 when it sold for the British Record Price LINK.

This may just look like a slot car model but the process from start to finish is more detailed and professional than I ever imagined. Once the decision on a new model is made there are initial licensing agreements to be made with manufacturers before their CAD files are supplied. The files are then scaled down by 32 times before being stripped down to the bare lines to simplify the design. Then a skin is redrawn over the car's skeleton and each surface is stitched together like a digital quilt. A second skin is applied to set the body thickness to prevent the plastic sinking. The car is modeled in exploded form as there can be up to 30 different parts on each car, the majority being bespoke. The chassis must be individually recreated as each car has its own dimensions and design.
It takes 6 to 8 weeks per model to produce a final design which is sent off to China for moulds and tooling to be created. All of the slot car products are made using injection moulded plastic and once the car's form is set Scalextric's attention switches to the liveries which are taken very seriously to produce only those that are the most eye-catching and popular.
It can be seen that buying a slot car model from Scalextric is desirable not just in scale but in detail too.
