1958 ASTON MARTIN DBR1/3
Completed in 1958, its first outing that year was the Targa Florio, driven by Moss/Brooks it retired with gearbox failure but not before Moss broke his lap record set in the Mercedes 300SLR by over a minute. Shown above in 1960 it finished 3rd at Le Mans driven by Jim and Roy Salvadori for the Border Reivers. The above link to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum can be slow to load.
The car last appeared for Aston Martin at the Goodwood Tourist Trophy in September 1959. During the race, DBR1/3 which had been leading, caught fire whilst refuelling in the pits, damaging the car too badly to continue. The car was rebuilt and sold off to the Border Reivers. The first appearance at Charterhall was 25th September 1960, No. 38 driven by Jim Clark won Event 3 according to results posted in the Berwick Advertiser. A good photograph of Jim and Roy Salvadori with the DBR1 at Berwick upon Tweed harbour exists in Graham Gauld's book "Jim Clark Remembered".
At the same meeting, after a collision the previous day in the Formula 1 race for the Gold Cup at Oulton Park, Jim made his first appearance here in the Lotus Formula Junior (No.39) but retired with a transmission problem. This was the only occasion on which Jim drove a single-seater racing car in Scotland. A good quality photograph of Jim coming up to pass a TVR exists in Graham Gauld's "Jim Clark Remembered" book. It was later reported that in the race Jim's car retired with trouble in the crown wheel and pinion department. Apparently the crown wheel and pinion on the Lotuses - particularly the Junior and Formula 1 cars - was replaced fairly regularly and after two hectic races at Oulton Park the day before, when Jim won, this bit of equipment failed at Charterhall. Mike Warren, the Lotus mechanic who accompanied Jim, explained that this was the first time the car had failed to finish in the whole season. Perhaps this fact might help someone pinpoint which chassis it was, my hope is that it is 18J-701 which is in the Panini Museum - also home to the Marcos Xylon raced here by Jackie Stewart . One particular Lotus 18 Formula Junior chassis 18J-703 is featured in Issue No 56 - Spring 2024 Historic Lotus Racing. Apparently that particular car gave Jim wins at Oulton Park, Goodwood, Silverstone and Brands Hatch plus three second places. No mention is made of which visit to Oulton Park during 1960 it won.

The MK X remarks bear similarities to the engine installed in the Anglia which Jim took home to Edington Mains. The year 1963 however seems to be at odds with what was generally written i.e. 1961/2.

1954-type Lancia D50 Grand Prix, in my eyes this would win on looks alone.

It's worth saying here that Peter Collins, at the age of 25 in his first season of GP racing, almost became Britain's first motor racing world champion in 1956. He won two GPs for Lancia-Ferrari, and was neck-and-neck with team mate Fangio in the final round, the Italian GP. When Fangio's car broke early, as it had done too often that year, it was only because Collins "volunteered" to hand over his own machine during a pit stop that Fangio was able to win the race and claim the vital half-points which were permitted under the prevailing rules.
Peter Collins competed and won at Winfield on 21st July 1951 in the Formula III Race.
8-6-4-3-2-1 points awarded (best six).

The ex-Barry Filer A.C. Ace-Bristol #48 driven here by Jimmy McInnes. Jimmy is seated in the car talking to well known scrutineer and connoisseur owner Bertie Gilbart-Smith in 2022 at the Thirlestane Castle Sir Jackie Stewart Classic in aid of Race Against Dementia. Barry Filer was a customer of Dumbuck Garage and Jackie as mechanic would drive the car to events. Jimmy then competed in the A.C. at Rest and be Thankful on 2nd July (photo), Heathfield on 9th July & 10th September, Charterhall on 25th September. It was on 10th September that Jackie drove Barry Filer's Porsche at the Heathfield sprint. These events are shown below in chronological order.
Peter Campbell's Bryan Wingfield Bristol Special at the Castle Combe Autumn Classic on 5th October 2019. Bryan is believed to have built this car up during 1958 when he lived in Glasgow. Its 2013 outing with FISCAR at Castle Combe is thought to be the first for nearly 30 years.

September 10th S.S.C.C. sprint at Heathfield
On Saturday July 9th Barry Filer took his new Porsche to the S.S.C.C. Sprint at Heathfield Aerodrome where (reportedly) he selected the wrong gear at the chicane resulting in him losing bits of the engine. Probably thinking better not try it again in this car, Barry asked if Jackie "wanted a wee run down to Heathfield in Ayrshire."
Jackie subsequently went on to drive Barry Filer's Marcos and Aston Martin.
From an interview by Cameron McNeish in The Scots Magazine
There is a story from 1964 by Anthony Marsh telling that Jackie first tested Filer's Porsche at Oulton Park.

The ex-Barry Filer A.C. Ace-Bristol #49 driven here by Jimmy McInnes. Jimmy is seated in the car talking to the owner in 2022 at the Thirlestane Castle Sir Jackie Stewart Classic in aid of Race Against Dementia. Barry Filer was a customer of Dumbuck Garage and Jackie as mechanic would drive the car to events.
Personally I think this is now a tremendous looking car. The side view below shows just what a great stance this profile achieved without superfluous trim, the coloured wheel centres and stripe giving acknowledgement to the race heritage without being overdone.

Is this Mike Warren the Lotus mechanic in the above photograph?
#8 Jock Russell's 2-litre Lotus XV is ex-Tommy Dickson.
On #25 contrary to the programme entry which shows the driver as J. R. Galloway in a Lotus VII, the extracts below from issues 101,102 & 103 of Cars for the Connoisseur give an insight into what happened on this day.
note: I'm not one to contradict Graham but he is right that the last race of the season at Charterhall was Jim's last in Scotland but 1960 is a typo - it was perhaps the last race of 1961 on September 24th.
note: the "Dear Charles" in the letters refer to the late Charles Harbord who published these excellent magazines

Although an out-and-out clubby, a highlight of DD 300's career took place here when Jim Clark finished third in this 10-lap GT race.

printed December
The official magazine of Club Lotus NZ in their December 2016 Edition 62 are proud to believe they have the most famous Lotus 18. From this story and the Autosport report (September 30th 1960) the NZ car #703 is apparently not the one raced at Charterhall. Mike McKee is stated as having taken over #703 and his first appearance in it was the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting of September 24th. Lotus fielded a three-car team for the 1960 FJ race season, the drivers were Jim Clark, Trevor Taylor and Mike McKee (later replaced by Peter Arundell). Jim, Trevor, Peter and Mike in #703 all raced at Oulton Park this day and Jim won both heats making him overall winner. Part of the race is featured on the JMW0005 DVD - 1960s British Single Seater Racing by David Roscoe.
Last drive in Formula Junior for Jim Clark. At the Boxing Day Brands Hatch meeting he clinched the John Davy Trophy by winning the Formula Junior race in the works Lotus-Ford.
Also racing this day was Jack Wober's recently acquired 1957 Le Mans winning Ecurie Ecosse D-type RSF 301.
